Volkswagen Amarok celebrates major milestone in Australia

Nov 21, 2024 by admin

On November 12, Volkswagen Australia delivered the 100,000th example of its Amarok ute to a returning customer in Townsville, Queensland.

The 100,000th Amarok was a popular Style TDI600 variant, which is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine producing 184kW of power and 600Nm of torque.

The ute was sold by Pickerings Auto Group in Townsville, to returning customer Peta Wilson.

To commemorate the milestone Volkswagen threw in a roof-top tent, roof bars, bonnet protector, snorkel, dual battery system, and a smart power outlet for free. All together this equipment costs around $9000.

The Volkswagen Amarok first launched in Australia in 2010, meaning it took the company 14 years to reach this 100,000 milestone.

In 2016 the Amarok became the first mass-produced ute to come with a V6 turbo-diesel. As it currently stands, V6-powered Amaroks are outselling the four-cylinder versions nine-to-one.

While the first-generation Amarok didn’t share its platform with any other vehicle, the second-generation model, which launched locally in 2023, shares its underpinnings with the top-selling Ford Ranger ute.

First-generation Amarok sales peaked in 2018, when a total of 9290 examples were sold.

To the end of October this year, Volkswagen has sold a total of 7297 examples of the second-generation Amarok. This is a far cry from the top-selling Ford Ranger (53,119 sales), Toyota HiLux (46,594) and Isuzu D-Max (25,644) in terms of popularity.

This sales milestone for the Amarok comes soon after VW set a new Guinness World Record in the ute.

Driven by German endurance driver and multiple record holder Rainer Zietlow, alongside his co-driver Marius Biela and Australia’s Brad Bowman, a modified Amarok V6 Style set a new record time for crossing Australia’s 10 deserts: six days and 17 hours.

Starting in Maree, South Australia, the record attempt saw the three-man crew travel across the Great Victoria, Great Sandy, Tanami, Simpson, Gibson, Little Sandy, Strzelecki, Sturt Stony, Tirari and Pedirka deserts, arriving in Alice Springs 6421km later.

The Amarok used 1199 litres of diesel in the process – averaging 18.7L/100km – and suffered only a single tyre puncture.

To commemorate the record-breaking feat, Volkswagen Australia is launching a new limited-edition version of the Amarok called the 10 Deserts Edition.
